    (1927– ). Born in Hungary, now an American citizen, he won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1994 for his work with carbocations. These are positively charged hydrocarbons with lifetimes on the order of microseconds. Olah developed methods of studying carbocations with different physical techniques, changing the direction of this field. He received a Ph.D. from the Technical University of Budapest in 1949.
