(optical bleach; colorless dye; fluorescent brightener). A colorless, fluorescent, organic compound that absorbs UV light and emits it as visible blue light. The blue light masks the undesirable yellow of textiles, paper, detergents, and plastics. Some examples are derivatives of 4,4′-diaminostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid, coumarin derivatives such as 4-methyl-7-diethylaminocoumarin.
