Particle Size

    Name:
    Particle Size
    Detailed information:
This term refers chiefly to the solid particles of which industrial materials are composed (carbon black, zinc oxide, clays, pigments, and the like). The smaller the particle, the greater will be the total exposed surface area of a given mass. Activity is a direct function of surface area; i.e., the finer a substance is, the more efficiently it will react, both chemically and physically. A colloidal pigment is a more effective colorant than a coarse one because of the greater surface area of its particles. A pound of channel carbon black has a surface area of 18 acres, which largely accounts for its powerful reinforcing effect in rubber. Thus, ultrafine grinding of powders is of utmost importance in such products as paints, cement, plastics, rubber, dyes, pharmaceuticals, printing inks, and numerous others.See Particle; Surface Chemistry; Colloid Chemistry; Sedimentation.
