(1904–1989). Awarded Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1987 for work in elucidating mechanisms of molecular recognition, which are fundamental to the enzymic catalysis, regulation, and transport. He reported that alkali metal ions could be bound by crown ethers into a more rigid, layered structure, in which the alkali metal ion was bound into the center of the ring. This field of study is called host-guest chemistry. An American born in Korea, Pedersen received an M.S. from M.I.T. in 1927.
