(PRE). A binding site in a promoter to which the activated progesterone receptor can bind. The progesterone receptor is essentially a transcription factor which is activated only in the presence of progesterone. The activated receptor will bind to a PRE, and transcription of the adjacent gene will be altered.See: Response Element.
