The breaking up (molecular fragmentation) of molecules by ultrasonic radiation. Examples: sonolysis in pure water produces hydrogen atoms, hydroxyl radicals, molecular hydrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide; acetonitrile in an argon atmosphere produces molecular hydrogen, nitrogen, and methane.
