    Fermenting bacteria that obtain energy by converting sulfate compounds into sulfide compounds. These bacteria, which cannot tolerate oxygen, are common in the muds of swamps, ponds, and lagoons. Bacteria of this type seem to have flourished in Archean time, when there was little atmospheric oxygen.
