Detailed information:
A machine used for finishing paper. It is a vertical stack of from 3 to 12 or more rolls through which the sheet is threaded. The top and bottom rolls are of chilled cast iron and are larger than the intermediate rolls, several of which are of the fiber type. Overall widths may be as much as 15 ft. Operating speeds range from 600 to 2000 ft per minute. The supercalender imparts gloss and smoothness to high-grade papers, both coated and uncoated, as a result of the interaction of the metal and resilient fiber rolls.See Fiber Roll; Calender; Paper.
