Born in Japan, Tanaka won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2002 for his pioneering work concerning the development of methods for identification and structure analyses of biological macromolecules. Tanaka received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Tohoku University and undertakes his research at the Shimadzu Corporation.
