    (1632–1723). A native of Holland, van Leeuwenhoek was a professional lens grinder. He developed the compound optical microscope, which had been invented in 1590, to a point where he was able to obtain magnifications up to 275 times. He was the first to observe bacteria, spermatozoa, and other unicellular animals, which he described to the Royal Society of London.See Optical Microscope.
