    (1866–1919). A native of Switzerland, Werner was awarded the Nobel Prize for his development of the concept of the coordination theory of valence, which he advanced in 1893. His ideas revolutionized the approach to the structure of inorganic compounds and in recent years have permeated this entire area of chemistry. The term Werner complex has largely been replaced by “coordination compound.”
