In the presence of potassium hydroxide in water-Me2SO mixtures, the title compound 2 gives the 1:1 ? complex by addition of hydroxide ion to the unsubstituted ring position; kinetic and equilibrium data are reported.A linear relationship between log k1, log k-1, and log K-1 and the molar fraction of Me2SO is found.In Me2SO-water (40 percent, v/v) the kinetic and equilibrium measurements suggest that the dianion arising from the ionization of the hydroxyl group of the adduct 3 is formed.
