In these structures, the bond distance of the Au–C bond is around
2.05 Å, replying the strong interaction between the biphenyl mol-
ecules and the gold nanoparticles, which is in agreement with the
results obtained from XPS spectra (Fig. 7). Looking at the total en-
ergy of the three structures (Fig. 11, A1, A2, and A3), both structure
A2 (meta-site substitute) and A3 (para-site substitute) show much
lower energy than structure A1 (ortho-site substitute), which indi-
cates that structures A2 and A3 are preferable over structure A1. It
should also be pointed out that the meta-site-substituted benzene
rings required less active energy (
reaction proceeding from structure A to structure B, in comparison
with those of para-site ( E = 0.30880 eV), indicating that the A2
DE = 0.30032 eV) to initialize the
D
structure is preferable. This is because two benzene rings in struc-
ture A3 are shown to be perpendicular to each other, which could
easily be observed in the A3 model in Fig. 11. This kind of perpen-
dicular structure creates difficulties and requires more energy to
adjust their postures to structure B to initiate the coupling step.
Therefore, structure A2, with the two benzene rings facing each
other at a minor angle, allows it to migrate into the next reaction
intermediate. These results are highly consistent with the activity
order of various substituted substrates (meta > para ꢅ ortho) ob-
tained from the catalytic tests and gives a full explanation for the
origin of distinguishable activities.

In summary, Au nanoparticles with high dispersion on Mg–Al
mixed oxides have been successfully prepared. The Au nanoparti-
cles are highly efficient and stable catalysts for the aerobic homo-
coupling of phenylboronic acid. Based on the experimental
evidence, a new mechanism for the homocoupling of phenylbo-
ronic acid on metallic Au nanoparticles is proposed. The yield of
aryl-substituted biphenyl is strongly dependent on the position
of the substituted groups, in good agreement with DFT calcula-
tions. The superior catalytic performance in homocoupling of
phenylboronic acids over Au/MAO-AE and Au/MAO-HDP catalysts
is potentially important for synthesis of fine chemicals and phar-
maceuticals in the future.
