executed with the Grubbs I catalyst, the Grubbs II catalyst
performed very well for the dienyne metathesis of 12. Subsequent
multiple hydroboration/oxidation reactions of the resulting
hydroazulenes 8 and 11 installed three out of four stereogenic
centers of the target sesquiterpene lactone 1 in a single step and
gave rise to the common intermediate 9 for both synthetic routes.
Oxidative transformation of 9 to the known diketo--lactone 10
already represented a formal synthesis of 1, however with
unsatisfactory yield due to a severely competing -elimination
during attempted methylenation of 10. Finally, masking of the -
butyrolactone enabled a much more efficient completion of the
total synthesis of 1 via double carbonyl olefination of the
diketoacetal 48.

[24] We modified the synthesis of phosphonate 36 described by Wu[23e] to a
concise two-step procedure. Phosphonate 53 was prepared according to
a protocol of Hoffmann[42] by deprotonating commercially available
phosphonate 52 with butyllithium, subsequent treatment with -
butyrolactone, and then silylation with TMSCl to give phosphonate 53 in
91% yield. The diazo transfer was carried out with p-tosyl azide, and
diazophosphonate 36 was isolated in moderate yield after work-up with
hydrochloric acid.
