coordinating to the Bi atoms through each of the pyridyl nitrogen
atoms. The 3-bpdh ligand in compound 3 acts as a bridging ligand
via two pyridyl nitrogen atoms. Interestingly in all three com-
pounds the ligands 3-bpdb, 3-bpdh and 4-bpdh were protonated

[30]–to yield the cations H2bpdb2+, 3-Hbpdh+ and 4-Hbpdh+, an
observation only rarely seen for the other metal ion coordination
polymers with this type of ligand [47–57]. This shows that the
Bi+3 ion may be the ion of choice when one wants to prepare supra-
molecular compounds that contain protonated pyridyl ligands.
Thus this research not only shows the significant influences of
the coordination modes and flexibilities of the ligands 3-bpdb,
3-bpdh and 4-bpdh on the structural topology, but also illustrates
the effect of the metal ion, here Bi+3 ions, on the polymeric compo-
nents, which provides valuable information for the rational design
of coordination polymers with specific molecular architectures.
