has been elusive. (3) All isolated compounds show a symmetrical

attributed to the symmetrical environment surrounding the Co3
unit. (4) Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that these
EMACs are paramagnetic, with up to seven unpaired electrons at
ambient temperature. (5) Comparison of electrochemical and mag-
netic properties of compounds with cocooned and open chains
show that such properties are tunable by manipulation of the li-
gand and crystal environment. Finally, it should be noted that con-
sidering the unique structure of Co36+ chain which is encapsulated
by organic insulators, these cocooned species may be valuable for
use as molecular magnetic ‘‘stir bars”.
