Manganese carbonate Specification

Manganese carbonate is a brown solid with the chemical formula MnCO3. Its IUPAC name is Manganese(II) carbonate. The substance has EINECS registry number 209-942-9 and CAS registry number 598-62-9. In addition, it is insoluble in water which is stable and incompatible with strong acids, strong oxidizing agents. Meanwhile, Manganese carbonate may be moisture senstive. When using Manganese carbonate, you should be very cautious about it. On the one hand, you must not breathe its dust. On the other hand, you must avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Physical properties about Manganese carbonate are: (1)ACD/LogP: -0.809; (2)ACD/LogD (pH 5.5): -1.98; (3)ACD/LogD (pH 7.4): -3.77; (4)ACD/BCF (pH 5.5): 1.00; (5)ACD/BCF (pH 7.4): 1.00; (6)ACD/KOC (pH 5.5): 1.00; (7)ACD/KOC (pH 7.4): 1.00; (8)#H bond acceptors: 3; (9)#H bond donors: 2; (10)Flash Point: 169.8 °C ; (11)Enthalpy of Vaporization: 63.37 kJ/mol; (12)Boiling Point: 333.6 °C at 760 mmHg; (13)Vapour Pressure: 2.58E-05 mmHg at 25°C

Preparation of Manganese carbonate: Treatment of aqueous solutions of manganese(II) salts with alkali metal carbonates leads to precipitation of this faintly pink solid. You can also use manganese metal dissolved in nitric acid to generate manganous nitrate solution which should be filtrated and purified by hydrogen sulfide. The filtrate reacts with ammonium bicarbonate, which is a kind of double decomposition reaction, and generates Manganese carbonate. The sediments is eluted, filtered, dehydrated and dried to gain high purity of Manganese carbonate.

Mn + 4 HN03 → Mn(NO3)2 + 2 NO2 + 2 H2O
Mn(NO3)2 + 2 NH4HCO3 → MnCO3↓+ 2 NH4NO3 + CO2↑+ H2O

What's more, Manganese carbonate can be prepared by manganese sulfate dissolved in water or vapour and then is filtered to remove undissolved substance. In addition, it is purified by hydrogen sulfide to remove impurities such as heavy metals. The mixture is heated, filtrated to produce pure manganese sulfate solution. After that, it will react with ammonium bicarbonate solution at 25~30 °C to generate Manganese carbonate, which is a kind of double decomposition reaction. Finally, the sediments is eluted, dehydrated and hot-air dried at 80~90 °C to gain Manganese carbonate.

MnSO4 + 2 NH4HCO3 → MnCO3↓+ (NH4)2SO4 + CO2↑+ H2O

Besides, Manganese carbonate can also be prepared by the mixture of soft manganese ore powder and pulverized coal during reduction, roasting and sulfuric acid leaching, after that you would produce manganese sulfate solution which is filtered and then reacts with ammonium bicarbonate. At last, you will gain Manganese carbonate through vacuum filtration, dehydration and dry.

MnO2 + C → MnO + COMnO2 + CO → MnO + CO2
MnO + H2SO4 → MnSO4 + H2O
MnSO4 + 2 NH4HCO3 → MnCO3 + (NH4)2SO4 + CO2↑+ H2O

Uses of Manganese carbonate: Manganese carbonate is widely used as an additive to plant fertilizers to cure manganese deficient crops. It is also used in health foods, in ceramics as a glaze colorant and flux, and in concrete stains. In addition, the substance is widely used as desulfurization catalyst, medicine and welding wire materials. Manganese carbonate is used for the preparation of manganese salt and used as the material of telecommunications equipment components.
