Hence, when the polymer dissolves in water, clusters of hydrophobic domains are formed yielding a network structure. Such a structure induces a large increase in the solution viscosity, which gives rise to a viscous and often elastic and gel-like fluid. These associative polymers are good candidates for thickening agents in environmentally friendly coating applications.
