Filipendula ulmaria, ext. (Filipendula ulmaria, Spirea ulmaria) is appears to have strong anti-free radical properties, as well as aromatic, astringent, analgesic and topical anti-inflammatory activity. The anti-free radical activity is attributed to its flavonoid and tannin content; the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties are due to non-volatile salicylate derivatives, including salicylic acid and methyl salicylate. gallic acid is another constituent. Analgesic, antiinflammatory, and anti-free radical activity make meadowsweet extract particularly useful in sun care preparations. The word aspirin is derived from this plant’s Latin name: a from acetyl and spirin from Spireae.
