  • General Description 1,1'-DIBENZYL-4,4'-BIPYRIDINIUM DICHLORIDE (also known as benzyl viologen dichloride) is a viologen homologue that undergoes rapid one-electron reduction to form stable cation radicals when exposed to a radio-frequency gaseous plasma, both in solid and solvated states. The resulting radicals are susceptible to re-oxidation upon air exposure but can be reversibly reduced again. Additionally, its reduction kinetics and solvation dynamics are pressure-dependent, with increased pressure accelerating radical pair decay in solvents like acetonitrile and propylene carbonate, though high pressures in PC can retard the process due to slowed solvent fluctuations. When incorporated into zeolite Y-modified electrodes, its electrochemical behavior remains largely unchanged, but it can participate in charge trapping reactions when paired with surface-adsorbed metalloporphyrins.
