  • General Description (R)-Lactate, also known as D-lactic acid, is an enantiomer of lactic acid with applications in stereoselective polymer production, such as polylactic acid (PLA). It can be synthesized from (R)-alanine or produced via enzymatic methods, such as the enhanced catalytic activity of D-lactate dehydrogenase (D-LDH) from *Sporolactobacillus laevolacticus* through site-directed mutagenesis. Additionally, (R)-lactate derivatives, like cardenolide lactates, have been studied for their chemotaxonomic significance and biological activities, though they exhibit weaker cytotoxic and Na+,K+-ATPase inhibitory effects compared to other cardenolides. Its production can also be contrasted with L-lactic acid, which is derived from alternative sources like wastewater sludge.
