The research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a persistent four-coordinate iron-centered radical, stabilized by p-donation, through the reaction between Fe2(CO)9 and phosphinyl radical 1, resulting in the formation of a dinuclear iron carbonyl complex 2 with an elongated unsupported Fe–Fe bond. The main experiments involved thermal Fe–Fe bond homolysis to generate a four-coordinate carbonyl-based iron-centered radical, 3, which was found to be highly reactive towards organic radicals, leading to the formation of diamagnetic five-coordinate Fe(II) complexes. The analyses used to characterize the complexes included IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, ESR spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and theoretical calculations such as DFT and TD-DFT. These techniques were employed to confirm the structure, bonding, and electronic properties of the synthesized complexes, as well as to investigate the equilibrium between the generated radical species and their reactivity with various organic radicals.
