Rosin gum Specification

Rosin is stable under normal conditions. Besides, It is combustible. Rosin is incompatible with oxidizing agents. Rosin is insoluble in cold water, hot water, but it is soluble in many organic substances such as diethyl ether, alcohol, oils, benzene, CARBON tetrachloride and so on. Rosin, also called colophony or Greek pitch (Pix græca), is a solid form of resin obtained from pines and some other plants, mostly conifers, produced by heating fresh liquid resin to vaporize the volatile liquid terpene components.

Physical properties about Rosin are: (1)ACD/LogP: 6.511; (2)# of Rule of 5 Violations: 1; (3)ACD/LogD (pH 5.5): 5.59; (4)ACD/LogD (pH 7.4): 3.79; (5)ACD/BCF (pH 5.5): 6321.36; (6)ACD/BCF (pH 7.4): 99.52; (7)ACD/KOC (pH 5.5): 10031.41; (8)ACD/KOC (pH 7.4): 157.92; (9)#H bond acceptors: 2; (10)#H bond donors: 1; (11)#Freely Rotating Bonds: 2; (12)Index of Refraction: 1.541; (13)Molar Refractivity: 89.488 cm3; (14)Molar Volume: 284.554 cm3; (15)Polarizability: 35.476 10-24cm3; (16)Surface Tension: 40.7840003967285 dyne/cm; (17)Density: 1.063 g/cm3; (18)Flash Point: 208.124 °C; (19)Enthalpy of Vaporization: 76.355 kJ/mol; (20)Boiling Point: 439.457 °C at 760 mmHg;

Preparation of Rosin: Rosin is the resinous constituent of the oleo-resin exuded by various species of pine, known in commerce as crude turpentine. The separation of the oleo-resin into the essential oil (spirit of turpentine) and common rosin is accomplished by distillation in large copper stills. The essential oil is carried off at a temperature of between 100° and 160°C, leaving fluid rosin, which is run off through a tap at the bottom of the still, and purified by passing through straining wadding. Rosin varies in color, according to the age of the tree from which the turpentine is drawn and the degree of heat applied in distillation, from an opaque, almost pitch-black substance through grades of brown and yellow to an almost perfectly transparent colorless glassy mass. The commercial grades are numerous, ranging by letters from A, the darkest, to N, extra pale, superior to which are W, window glass, and WW, water white varieties, the latter having about three times the value of the common qualities.

Uses of Rosin: In the rubber industry, as a softening agent, gum Rosin is used to make the rubber soft and easy for kneading. In printing ink industry, as color carrier of the ink, gum Rosin is mainly used to increase its adhesion to paper. In soap industry, gum Rosin is used to partially replace aliphatic acid. Besides, it is used as emulsifier in the producing of styrene-butadiene rubber, chloroprene rubber. It is applied to make sizing agent which prevents ink from dispersion.
