Poison by inhalation and ingestion. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl− and SOx.
1. Storage: Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a cool, dry place. Store in a tightly closed container. Store protected from moisture. Store under nitrogen.
2. Handling:Do not allow water to get into the container because of violent reaction. Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not ingest or inhale. Use and store under nitrogen. Use only in a chemical fume hood.
3. Personal Protection: Eyes: Wear chemical splash goggles.Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure.Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure. Respirators: Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29 CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Use a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator if exposure limits are exceeded or if irritation or other symptoms are experienced.
4. Fire Fighting: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Material will react with water and may release a flammable and/or toxic gas. Use foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. DO NOT USE WATER!
5. Air & Water Reactions: Reacts with water to produce corrosive and toxic gaseous hydrogen chloride.
6. Reactivity Profile: 2-CHLOROETHANESULFONYL CHLORIDE is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, alcohols, amines, alkali. May react vigorously or explosively if mixed with diisopropyl ether or other ethers in the presence of trace amounts of metal salts [J. Haz. Mat., 1981, 4, 291].
