The Ferrous chloride with CAS registry number of 7758-94-3 is also called Iron chloride. The IUPAC name is dichloroiron. Its EINECS registry number is 231-843-4. In addition, the molecular formula is Cl2Fe and the molecular weight is 126.75. It is a kind of off-white solid and belongs to the class of Inorganics. And it is soluble in water, methanol and ethanol, and slightly soluble in acetone and benzene. But it is insoluble in ether. What's more, it should be stored in sealed container, and put in a cool and dry place.
Preparation of Ferrous chloride: it can be prepared by ferric chloride and dry hydrogen. The equation as follows: 2FeCl3 + H2 → 2FeCl2 + 2HCl. In addition, it can be obtained from hydrochloric acid and iron. The equation as follows: Fe + 2HCl → FeCl2 + H2. Besides, it is conveniently prepared by addition of iron powder to a solution of methanol and concentrated hydrochloric acid under an inert atmosphere. An alternative laboratory synthesis of FeCl2 entails the reaction of FeCl3 with chlorobenzene: 2FeCl3 + C6H5Cl → 2FeCl2 + C6H4Cl2 + HCl.
Uses of Ferrous chloride: it can be used as a reducing flocculating agent in wastewater treatment, especially for wastes containing chromate. And it can be used for mordant, analytical reagent and unleaded gasoline additives. In addition, it can react with two molar equivalents of [(C2H5)4N]Cl to give the salt [(C2H5)4N]2[FeCl4].
