Specification

The systematic name of Nitrocellulose is Cellulose, nitrate. With the CAS registry number 9004-70-0, it is also named as Pyroxylin. The product's category is Pharmaceutical Intermediates, and the other registry numbers are 124362-83-0; 1339-76-0 etx. Besides, it is Pale yellow syrupy liquid with an ether-like odor. Floats on water. Produces an irritating vapor. Immiscible with water. And it is a nitrocellulose solution in ether and alcohol. Collodion has a wide range of uses in industry including applications in the manufacture of photographic film, in fibers, in lacquers, and in engraving and lithography. In medicine it is used as a drug solvent and a wound sealant.

Preparation of Nitrocellulose:
Cotton was used as the cellulose base. You can add cotton to concentrated Sulfuric acid and 70 % Nitric acid cooled to 0 °C to get this chemical. It also can be produced by treating Cellulose with Sulfuric acid and Potassium nitrate.

Uses of Nitrocellulose:
Nitrocellulose can be used as support in diagnostic tests where antigen-antibody binding occur. It is also used as a wound dressing in topical skin applications, such as liquid skin and in the application of salicylic acid, the active ingredient in Compound W wart remover. In addition, it is used in radon tests for alpha track etches. It is used as a medium for cryptographic one-time pads for making the disposal of the pad complete, secure, and efficient. Furthermore, it is used for producing of adhesives which is used to splice Celluloid plastics and gunpowder.

Safety Information of Nitrocellulose:
When you are using Nitrocellulose, please be cautious about it as the following: it is explosive when dry. And it is highly flammable that may form explosive peroxides. Please keep container in a well-ventilated place away from sources of ignition. Moreover, it is harmful if swallowed, so please do not breathe vapour. It is also rritating to eyes and skin. Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. Additionally, its apours may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Please do not empty into drains. And you should wear suitable protective clothing.
