A series of novel 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl N-oxalyl-N-methylcarbamate insecticides (N-oxalyl derivatives of carbofuran) containing carboxylic acid or carboxylate substituent were prepared.N-Oxalyl derivatives of carbofuran were examined for toxicity to white mice and a wide variety of economically important pests and for systemic activity in plants.Compared to the parent insecticide, carbofuran, the derivatives displayed significantly reduced toxicity to the white mouse.Two of the derivatives showed 700-1000 times less toxicity to the mouse than the nonderivatized carbofuran on a weight basis.All of the derivatives were highly effective insecticides against a wide variety of insects.The derivatives also displayed a wide spectrum of systemic pesticide activity comparable or superior to carbofuran in the cut stem, soil, and foliar applications.
