General Description

22-Ketocholesterol, also known as (3β)-stigmast-5-en-3-ol-22-one, is a biomolecule that belongs to the class of Triterpenoids. It is considered an intermediate in the biosynthesis of steroidal hormones and is particularly involved in the bioconversion of cholesterol into other steroidal hormones. Its structure is closely related to that of cholesterol, but with a ketone functional group at the 22nd carbon atom. Despite this close structural resemblance, 22-ketocholesterol interacts differently with organisms compared to cholesterol. Just like other sterols, this compound plays a crucial role in various biological functions such as membrane fluidity and permeability.
