It has specific rotations and exhibits an ultraviolet spectrum with absorption maxima at 227, 284, and 292 m/J, with shoulders at 275 and 305 m/J. One nitrogen atom in stemmadenine is tertiary, while the other is part of the indole ring. Its solution in concentrated HNO3 is a bright yellow.
