16 novel substituted 1,3-dialkoxy-2-azapropenylium salts 1 have been prepared by alkylation with trialkoxonium salts at the oxygen atom of the N-acylimidates 3.Indications for a competing N-alkylation reaction were found in the preparations of 1ka and 1lc.All new salts 1 (except for 1ic and 1lc) were proven by NMR spectroscopic studies to adopt a chiral, bent, or almost linear ground state geometry of structural type a) or c); this agrees well with the IR properties of the salts.Detailed spectroscopic data (1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, and FD mass spectroscopy) are included.
