A series of cycloadducts, identified as cis-2,5-diaryl-3-(3′, 4′-methylenedioxy phenyl)-4H,2,3,3a,5,6,6a-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-d] isoxazole-4,6-dione 3 have been prepared by cycloaddition of nitrone 2 with variously substituted maleimides. All the cycloadducts are characterised by various spectral studies. The nitrones have been prepared from protocatechuric aldehyde methylene ether 1.

The effect of the Lewis acid AlCl3 on the reactivity and stereoselectivity of the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of some azomethine N-oxides with N-phenylmaleimide in benzene at room temperature has been spectroscopically investigated.Decrease of the reactivity and increase of the stereoselectivity of the cycloaddition reactions are observed.
