General Description
2-tert-butyl-3-MethyliMidazolidin-4-one, also known as Tibolone, is a synthetic steroid hormone used primarily in hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women. It is structurally similar to the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, and has estrogenic, progestogenic, and androgenic effects. Tibolone is metabolized in the body to produce several active metabolites, including 3α- and 3β-hydroxytibolone, which contribute to its biological effects. It is used to alleviate symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness, and has also been studied for its potential benefits in preventing osteoporosis and reducing the risk of breast cancer. However, it is not suitable for use in women with a history of breast cancer or certain other medical conditions.

Preparations of the title compounds, 5-7 (Scheme 1 and Table 1), of their ammonium salts, 9-11 (Scheme 2 and Table 2), and of the corresponding cinnamaldehyde-derived iminium salts 12-14 (Scheme 3 and Table 3) are reported. The X-ray crystal structures of 15 cinnamyliminium PF6 salts have been determined (Table 4).
