General Description
(4aR,10bS)-4-methyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,10b-octahydro-4,7-phenanthroline (2E)-but-2-enedioate, also known as Ryanodine, is a chemical compound used as an insecticide and an avicide. It is derived from the laburnum plant and its toxic properties are due to its ability to bind to and block the ryanodine receptor, a calcium release channel in muscle cells. This action leads to muscle paralysis and eventual death in insects and birds that are exposed to the compound. Ryanodine is highly toxic to most animals, including humans, and must be handled with extreme caution. Its use is strictly regulated, and exposure to it should be avoided.
