Syntheses and phosphorus-31 NMR studies of five-coordinate nickel(II) complexes of the new ligand tris(o-(dimethylarsino)phenyl)phosphine

A series of low-spin, five-coordinate nickel(II) complexes of the new tripod ligand tris(o-(dimethylarsino)phenyl)phosphine, Ptas, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, infrared and electronic absorption spectroscopy, and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy. All of the complexes possess trigonal-bipyramidal coordination geometries in which the Ptas ligand occupies one apical and the three equatorial positions; the monodentate fifth ligand occupies the apical position trans to the phosphorus atom. Phosphorus-31 NMR spectroscopy provides a sensitive method for determining the effect of the fifth ligand on the chemical shift of the apex phosphorus atom and the mode of bonding for the ambidentate thiocyanato ligand.
