Ethers and esters of the sterically shielded 4,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2,3-dihydroxybenzene are prepared. Oxidation of the latter, unlike oxidation of pyrogallol containing no alkyl substituents in the ring, does not yield purpurogallin derivatives. Depending on oxidation conditions, products of dimerization of ionic (or radical ionic) and keto-enol isomeric intermediates of oxidation are isolated.
