(Chemical Presented) All in together: The title reaction takes place under mild conditions in the presence of a chiral phosphonic acid catalyst to provide 4-aryl substituted 1,4-dihydropyridines with up to 98% ee (see scheme). The products are useful substrates for the asymmetric synthesis of tetrahydropyridines and multifunctional piperidines, which are common substructures of natural products and pharmaceuticals. R1=aryl; R2,R3 = alkyl.
