A convenient and general entry into C6H6(CO)2Mn-R complexes has been achieved via preparation of C6H6(CO)2MnI and reduction in Na/NH3(l) to yield C6H6(CO)2Mn- followed by alkylation with R-X (R = -CH3, -CH2CH3, -CH(CH3)2, -CH2C6H5, -Si(CH3)3, -H). A study of the migration of alkyl groups from manganese to the arene ring to give 6-endo-substituted cyclohexadienyl complexes is reported.
