An effective route to functionalized C5-unsaturated hydantoin derivatives is described. This involves the reaction of a urea derivative, derived from the addition of a primary amine to an aryl-sulfonyl isocyanate, and a dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylate in the presence of isoquinoline.
