The spiroenediones (4), (11) and (12) have been synthesised via the 2-hydroxymethylene derivatives (2), (7) and (8) respectively in fair yields.An improved synthesis of 2-hydroxymethylenecycloheptanone (8) is also reported.

The spiro diones (3) and (6) have been synthesised via the 2-hydroxymethylene derivatives (2) and (4), respectively in improved yields.Methanesulphonic acid has been used in effecting the cyclisation of the triketones (2) and (5).
