By reaction of cyclooctatetraene-dilithium with R2P-Cl the expected 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene-7,8-diphosphanes (6) undergo spontaneously a conrotatory ring-opening reaction to give the title compounds.

Magnesium-COT reacts with diorganochlorophosphines to yield 1,2-diphosphino-substituted cyclooctatrienes.While the methyl compound leads to ring-concentration, larger substituents at phosphorus give rise to 1,8-diphosphino-octatetraenes (E,Z,Z,E) via retro-electrocyclization.The compounds are fully characterized by NMR. - Keywords: Magnesium-COT, Diphosphines, NMR Spectra
