Electrochemical or chemical reduction of 2>PF6 in THF produces a mixture of RhI species which can react with phenylethyne to produce the ?-bonded ethynyl derivative C6H5C2Rh(Salen)py. I(Salen)>- does not react readily with phenylethyne but does with 3,3,3-trifluoroprop-1-yne to yield CF3C2Co(Salen)py in 80percent yield.High yields of C6H5C2Co(Salen)py can be obtained when C6H5C2H reacts with 2O2 (79percent yield) or Co(Salen)(acac) (ca. 100percent yield) in pyridine/dimethylsulfoxide mixtures at 120 deg C.Hex-1-yne does not react with I(Salen)>- or the peroxy-CoIII complex.
