Difethialone is used as an anticoagulant rodenticide for controlling rodent infestations, particularly mice and rats, including those resistant to first-generation anticoagulants. It is a member of the hydroxy-4-benzothiopyranone family and was introduced in 1986 as a second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide. It is approved for use in the U.S. but not in most EU countries.
Preparation
Difethialone is made by condensation of 4-hydroxy-2H-
1-benzothiapyran-2-one with 3-(4 -bromo-4-biphenyl)-1,2,
3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthol in acetic acid containing concentrated
sulfuric acid (62).
