3-Keto-A-norsteroids have been prepared by oxidation of the Δ4-3-ketones in the six-membered ring A series to 5-oxo-3,5-seco-4-nor-3-oic acids followed by the reductive cyclization of the corresponding methyl esters with low-valency titanium.A similar route involving the oxidative cleavage of androst-5-en-7,17-dione afforded a 6-keto-B-norsteroid.
