The styryl-substituted diphosphanes 2a, b are prepared by the reaction of the chlorophosphanes 1a, b with magnesium or tert-butyllithium, respectively.Compound 2b, substituted with bulky residues, gives the racemic form of the phosphaalkene 5 by Cope rearrangement, which is slowly and irreversibly converted into the meso-form.
