Novel cyclopentane derivatives which are useful as an intermediate for the preparation of N-(L-aspartyl)-N'-(2,2,5,5-tetramethylcyclopentanecarbonyl)-R-1,1-diaminoethane are represented by the formula (I) STR1 wherein R1 is hydrogen and R2 is cyano, formyl, carbamoyl, alkanesulfonyloxy, or STR2 wherein R3 and R4 are the same or different and represent alkyl, substituted alkyl or R1 and R2 are combined to be methylsulfinylmethylene, acetoxymethylthiomethylene, halomethylthiomethylene, methylthiomethylene, alkoxy-methylene, or --CH2 --O--.
