Transition-metal-substituted diphosphenes. 3. Synthesis of stable diphosphenes with iron and ruthenium substituents. X-ray structure analysis of (η5-C5Me5)(CO)2FeP=PC 6H2-t-Bu3-2,4,6

The reaction of [(η5-C5Me5)(CO)2MP(SiMe 3)2 (M = Fe, Ru, Os) with 2,4,6-t-Bu3C6H2PCl2 (ArPCl2) in THF at 20°C afforded the novel diphosphenyl complexes (E)-(η5-C5Me5)(CO)2MP=PAr. Only the iron and ruthenium derivatives could be isolated from the reaction mixture as ocher-yellow or orange-yellow solids The corresponding osmium derivative was trapped as its Ni(CO)3 complex. Similarly stable (η5-C5H5)(CO)(PPh3)FeP=PAr was generated from (η5-C5H5)(CO)(PPh3)FeP(SiMe 3)2 and ArPCl2. The novel coordination compounds were characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic methods (IR, 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR, and mass spectroscopy). The molecular structure of (η5-C5Me5)(CO)2FeP=PAr was established by a complete single-crystal diffraction study [P21/c space group; Z = 4; a = 12.414 (6), b = 15.582 (7), c = 20.347 (8) A?; β= 126.45 (3)°].
