2,3,4-Trihydroxydesoxybenzoin (1) on reaction with diphenylcarbinol in the presence of BF3.Et2O at room temperature affords only its 5-diphenylmethyl derivative (2a) which is converted into trimethyl derivative (2b), 6-diphenylmethyl-7,8-dihydroxyisoflavone (4a) and its 2-methyl derivative (3a).Their structural assignments are based on derivatization and PMR data.
