Bis(tricarbonylchromium) complexes of arene compounds with two conjugated phehyl rings reduce electrochemically or chemically in a two-electron process to yield very stable dianions. The reduction process is proposed to proceed via an ECE mechanism generating a bis(η5-cyclohexadienyl)bis(tricarbonylchromium) complex. Infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR data support the proposed structure for the dianion produced from (η6:η6-biphenyl)bis(tricarbonylchromium). The electrochemical properties of the bis(tricarbonylchromium) complex of bimesityl provides an explanation for electrochemical reductive properties of all (η6-benzene)tricarbonylchromium complexes. Finally, the oxidative electrochemical properties of the mono and bis complexes are discussed.
