Diphenylcarbinol has been reacted with 7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (1) and 4,7-dihydroxy-3-phenylcoumarin (6) separately in the presence of Lewis acid; the former affords a mixture of 3,8-bis-diphenylmethyl (2a, 10.5 percent yield), 8-diphenylmethyl (3a, 12.4 percent), 3,6-bis-diphenylmethyl (4a, 5.2 percent) and 3-diphenylmethyl derivatives (5a, 9.3 percent) showing considerable reactivity of position-3; whereas the latter gives a mixture of 6,8-bis-diphenylmethyl (7a, 15.4 percent), 8-diphenylmethyl (8a, 9.3 percent) and 6-diphenylmethyl (9a, 5.6 percent) derivatives.
