The electron deficient 1,3-dipole PhCN+--NPh adds in 1/1 stoichiometry to the carbon disulfide complexes mer-W(CO)3(L-L)(CS2) (L-L = Ph2PC2H4PPh2, Me2PC2H4PMe2, 1,2-C6H4(PPh2)2) to give complexes of the heterocycle 2,4-diphenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazolethione.The transition metal fragments act as a protective group for the second C=S bond.
